Aeration
& Circulation Don't be fooled by imitations.
Aeration and circulation
is the lifeblood of your pond. Aeration induces oxygen into the
water for the koi to breathe, and good bacteria to grow. The three
common ways to aerate are waterfalls, venturi, and air stones.
Waterfalls produce oxygen through continuous churning of the water
as it splashes down the rocks returning to the pond. The more
splashing of the water the better oxygenated it will be therefore,
it is best to have multiple steps rather than one vertical drop in
the waterfall. Venturis, on the other hand, mix oxygen into the
water by pressure. They can be either water return tubes from the
filter system or powered tubes with their own pump. Venturis
produce oxygen by reducing the return water flow tube size to
create pressure while adding a vent tube to induce oxygen. This
action of increased pressure passing by the vent tube draws in the
fresh air from the vent producing a frothy flow of air bubbles and
water mix. By using a venturi, water flow can be oxygenated and
directed where needed.
Another way to create oxygen is with
air stones. Air stones powered by an air pump can be added any
where within the pond to create oxygen. One benefit of air stones
is that they can be added to a chamber style filter to produce
oxygen for the pond and promote faster bacterial growth within the
filter. With fresh circulated oxygen rich water, our koi can live
a happier life
